Get your story out there
Most journalists are on the lookout for interesting story ideas. This means there are lots of opportunities for you to pitch a story about your business to journalists and the wider media. If you have a story to tell – make sure people hear it!
One of the most effective ways to get media attention is to utilise data. If you share the results of your research with a journalist, they could well feature that data in a story. With this in mind, you can assume that collecting data is a really good investment for your business. When you create new data and share it with a journalist or media outlet, your business will be credited in that story and that could create great interest for you.
Hold a launch
Another effective way to get media attention for your company is to hold a launch. Put together an influential guest list and invite the right media, hire a professional photographer and make the event as memorable as you possibly can. It will create a buzz and, if you do it right, it will also get excellent media attention.
Help them help you
If the media does give you exposure, then it’s doing you a favour by providing you with free media attention. It’s important to remember this when you reach out to them. Always be polite to any journalist that you communicate with. Give them all the information they need and remember that they have to work to their schedule, not yours. Following these guidelines can help you establish a positive relationship with a journalist who could give you lots of free PR in the future. Collaboration is key here; as the eponymous Jerry Maguire said – ‘Help me help you!’
